Traffic Safety Awareness Initiative in Putnam County
Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that Putnam County law enforcement agencies will be teaming up this summer in an effort of reducing traffic crashes, especially those involving motorcycles.
The multi-agency traffic safety initiative will involve members of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Town of Kent Police Department, Village of Brewster Police Department, Village of Cold Spring Police Department, Putnam County District Attorney’s Office and Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services. Together, they will be conducting traffic safety checkpoints at various locations in Putnam County, inspecting cars, trucks and motorcycles for equipment violations. They will also look for unlicensed operators, those driving while impaired on drugs, and operators driving while intoxicated on alcoholic beverages.
Each year, New York State experiences an unnecessary tragic loss of life due to motor vehicle crashes, ” said Sheriff Donald B. Smith. “Statistics compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate that in 2011 there were 817 fatal motor vehicle crashes in New York State. It is noteworthy that 170 of them involved motorcycles. Our aim is to reduce traffic mishaps in Putnam County by making our roadways safer, ” concluded the Sheriff.
