Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that his department is investigating what is believed to have been an attempted robbery of the Putnam County National Bank, located at 89 Haviland Drive in the Putnam Lake section of the Town of Patterson.
At about 12:15PM yesterday, (January 21, 2014) the lobby of the bank was closed, however, its drive-in window was open for business. A customer attempted to enter the building telling a bank employee that he needed to get something from his safety deposit box. As the employee went to unlock the door, she observed a second man wearing a ski mask outside the bank. The teller kept the door locked and the would-be perpetrator ran off and fled in a white sedan.
A bank employee then spotted Putnam County Sheriff’s Deputy Andrew Kristan who was on patrol in vicinity of the bank, and hailed him down. He told Deputy Kristan of the incident that had just occurred at which time the deputy scoured the area and notified Sheriff’s communication personnel. Deputy Kristan was joined in the search by other members of the Sheriff’s Office and troopers from the Brewster barracks of the New York State Police. Adjoining law enforcement agencies in New York and nearby Connecticut were also alerted of the incident.
Although no weapon was displayed and entry was never made into the bank, there are similarities between the two previous bank robberies and this incident leading police to investigate this incident as an attempted robbery.
Investigators from the New York State Police and Putnam County Sheriff’s Office have teamed-up in the investigation of these bank robberies.
Anyone having information concerning these incidents is urged to call either the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation at (845) 225-8060 or New York State Police investigators at (845) 279-8656. All calls will be kept confidential.
